Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) offers prospective doctoral candidates and those who already pursue their doctorate a multitude of possibilities to get information, guidance and advice. Various university institutions and departments provide general information that is relevant to a doctoral project. Moreover, there are additional contact points which provide assistance concerning specific questions.

General information:

International Office
The International Office – Incoming, advises and supports graduates from abroad who are interested in pursuing a doctorate at JGU. The International Office – Outgoing helps postgraduates who are planning a research stay in a foreign country.

Dean’s Offices of the Faculties
The first contact points for any questions on the applicable doctoral degree regulations as well as discipline-related questions are the respective Dean’s Offices of the fields of study. They are registered in the list of the faculties.

Portal Studying
The website provides information on, among other aspects, the requirements for doctoral studies at JGU, the various application stages as well as the necessary forms and documents.

JGU’s Student Service Center
The Student Service Center is the central contact point for prospective doctoral candidates from Germany with respect to any questions on the application and admission procedures as well as enrollment.

Student Service Center at FTSK Germersheim (in German only)
The Student Service Center at FTSK Germersheim provides assistance concerning the legal matters of admission and enrollment as well as matters of organization with respect to the Faculty 06.

Central institutions of JGU
JGU’s central institutions fulfill interdisciplinary tasks with respect to research, teaching or continuing education.

Career Service
The Career Service at JGU supports graduates as to their professional orientation, planning their professional future and acquiring skills beyond their specific expertise.

Family Services Center
The Family Services Center is the central contact and coordination point for all parents (to be) and for those who care for a relative in addition to their job or studies.

Supporting young researchers
The Center for Quality Assurance and Development (ZQ) informs young researchers on funding opportunities for travels to attend conferences and supports the implementation of events organized by doctoral groups.

Research funding
The Research and Technology Transfer Office assists and advises young researchers regarding questions on and searches for funding options, filing applications as well as JGU’s research environment.

Equal opportunity
The Office of Gender Affairs and Equal Opportunity provides information on support and promotion options for qualified young female researchers and gives advice concerning career-specific questions.

Ombudsperson for Research Practice (in German only)
All members of Johannes Gutenberg University can turn to the Ombudsperson regarding good academic practice issues or in cases of academic misconduct.
